Creators of musical theater have long been inspired by books, music, or even myths and have transformed preexisting work into some of musical theater’s most beloved shows. Films in particular have served as the source material for many incredible adaptations.
In this class, we will explore the legal process of adapting a film into a smash musical, looking at film genres ranging from musical feature films like The Lion King, to cult classics like Carrie, to indie films like The Band’s Visit, and even movies-turned-TikTok sensations like Ratatouille. We will cover acquisition of intellectual property, contract negotiations, and licensing agreements in this crash course on bringing your favorite movie to a packed theater!
