Music Law Basics

Join us on April 11, 2019, for an informative introduction to a number of legal aspects of the music industry. Topics will include copyright registration, ownership and fair use, an overview of music publishing, Performing Rights Organizations (“PROs”) and record labels, including the main deal points in recording and publishing contracts, as well as the basics of music clearances for the use of music in film and television. We will also discuss the newly-passed Music Modernization Act, a very important piece of legislation for all musicians.

This class is essential for musicians, multidisciplinary artists using music in their work, and anyone else interested in learning more about the music industry from an expert in the field!

This class will be taught by Marc D. Ostrow, Esq. an attorney in private practice focusing in the areas of copyright and entertainment law, with a particular emphasis in the music business.

About the instructor

Marc D. Ostrow is an attorney in private practice focusing in the areas of copyright and entertainment law, with a particular emphasis in the music business. He represents composers, songwriters, recording artists, labels, music publishers as well as other creators and licensors of intellectual property. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law where he teaches a course on music law.

From 2006-2008, Marc was the General Manager of the New York office of the classical music publisher, Boosey & Hawkes. Prior to joining Boosey in 2004 as Vice President, Business Affairs, Marc was a Senior Attorney at BMI and from 1995 until joining BMI in 1998, he was the General Counsel of Second Floor Music, a boutique music publisher specializing in jazz.

Marc is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Chicago Law School. He has served as on the board of the New York Chapter of the Association of Independent Music Publishers and as a Trustee of the Copyright Society of the USA. Marc frequently speaks at various industry forums and educational institutions. He is also a performing songwriter and composer.
