Legal Issues in Street Art

What makes street art authorized/legal? Who owns street art? How can street artists protect their creative works? While the transient medium of street art makes the art form so interesting, it also creates a host of legal questions. This class will provide an overview of how New York street artists seek legal protections for their work. By exploring existing precedents, including the foundational 5Pointz case, and existing statutes, such as the Visual Artists Rights Act, this class will navigate the legal issues connected to street art and the resulting protections available to artists.
