It is essential that visual artists know their legal rights and understand the wealth inherent in their creative assets. In this Visual Art 101 program, we will provide an overview of the basic rights artists should know in order to protect their CREATIVE ASSETS, including copyright, fair use, moral rights and a statute that protects their work in galleries.

Carol J. Steinberg has practiced art, copyright, and entertainment law in New York City and on the East End of Long Island for over twenty years. She is a Member of the Faculty of the School of Visual Arts, where she teaches courses on Artists’ Rights. Carol is Co-chair of the Fine Arts Committee of the State Bar’s Entertainment, Arts, and Sports Law Section and of its Pro Bono Steering Committee and a member of the City Bar’s Art Law Committee, where she chaired the sub-committee on Artists’ Rights and currently chairs the IP sub-committee. She often speaks to artists and creatives on Artists’ Rights and has been a frequent lecturer for NYFA’s professional development programs. She is also a member of the Copyright Society, East Hampton Arts Council, the Fine Arts Federation, ALAI (International artists’ rights organization founded by Victor Hugo), and the Board of Directors of the Center for Art Law.
