Art Consignment: What It Is and What to Look Out For (CLE)

This presentation is intended to provide you with an overview of what the consignment process entails so you can come away with a better understanding of the consignment relationship. You will learn what to look out for in a consignment agreement, its purpose and the key terms.

This program provides 1 Professional Practice Continuing Legal Education Credit for attorneys (Approved for Non-Transitional and Transitional Attorneys).

Instructors:

Anne-Laure Alléhaut, Esq., Counsel at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP: Anne-Laure Alléhaut is Counsel in the Firm’s Art and Museum Law practice. Ms. Alléhaut concentrates her practice on all aspects of art law, working with artists, private collectors, museums, art organizations and tax exempt organizations, galleries, dealers and advisors and financial institutions. Ms. Alléhaut has experience in drafting and negotiating a wide variety of art related agreements such as consignment agreements, private sales, commission of art and authenticity disputes.

Ms. Alléhaut previously served as Senior Vice President and Associate General Counsel of Sotheby’s, Inc., where she advised management and senior executives on deal structure, strategy, and legal and reputational risk in connection with the sale of works of art. Prior to joining Sotheby’s, Ms. Alléhaut was a corporate associate at two multinational law firms, focusing on mergers & acquisitions.

Lisa Wang, Esq., Associate at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP: Lisa Wang’s practice focuses on all areas of art law, representing private collectors, galleries, artist-endowed foundations, art dealers, artists, and other arts and cultural organizations on a wide range of matters including auction consignments and private sales, loans of artwork for exhibition, artist catalogue raisonnés, provenance, authenticity and title disputes, restitution and cultural property issues, artwork commissions, intellectual property issues and artist’s rights.

Ms. Wang also focuses on intellectual property counseling and related transactions for a wide-range of public charities, private foundations, and other tax-exempt entities as well as for for-profit companies. Such matters include, licensing, co-ventures, asset sales and transfers, entertainment and media-related transactions and publishing agreements, as well as counseling on trademark (prosecution, protection, and enforcement of marks) and copyright (fair use, potential infringement) issues.

Prior to joining the Firm, Ms. Wang was the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of the non-profit organization Plus1, a music industry focused philanthropy platform, and practiced in the San Francisco office of a global law firm.
