Legal and Business Issues in Art: Three-Part Workshop Series

October 16 @ 5:30 pm - October 30 @ 6:30 pm

VLA is excited to present a three-part workshop series aimed at providing artists of all disciplines and attorneys with fundamental and practical knowledge of key areas in art law. In each workshop, you’ll get the legal tools to make your art work for you. Through understanding principles of copyright and contract law, you’ll be better equipped to understand the marketplace value of your work and make a living doing what you love.

This education program is also a great opportunity for new attorneys looking to get into the art law field, and for experienced attorneys to refresh their skills. Each workshop provides Continuing Legal Education credits.

All workshops are held at VLA, located at 1 East 53rd Street, New York, NY 10022.

Part I: Contracts and Copyright Essentials
(1  Continuing Legal Education credit)
Tue, October 16, 2018
5:30 PM – 7:00 PM

Through this class, you will learn the essentials of contract formation, enforceability, and some standard provisions for artists to include in contracts. We will then dive into the fundamentals of basic copyright protection, including copyrightability of works, issues in copyright ownership, and infringement and remedies.

This class provides fundamental knowledge of contracts and copyright, which we will explore further in Part II and III of this series, covering topics such as infringement and fair use, as well as how to understand licensing of creative work. This class is taught by VLA’s Staff Attorney Laura Levin-Dando.

Part II: Is it Fair? (A Guide to Fair Use in Art)
(1.5 Continuing Legal Education credits)
Mon, October 22, 2018
5:00 PM – 6:30 PM

Are you a visual artist wondering if and when you can incorporate copyrighted material into your artwork? There are certain circumstances where the limited, “fair use” of copyrighted material may be permitted. This course will build on the fundamentals discussed in Part I of the series, to delve further into issues such as infringement, the fair use defense, and other related topics. This class is taught by VLA’s Executive Director Katie Wagner.

Part III: License It
(1.5 Continuing Legal Education credits)
Tue, October 30, 2018
5:00 PM – 6:30 PM

Licensing creative work is a popular way for artists to generate income and exposure from their work. At the same time, licensing is complicated, even for those with experience doing it, and the smallest details can cost you. This class will take you through practical examples of licensing agreements and situations you may find yourself in (and what to do in these situations). You’ll have the opportunity to go over a standard licensing agreement point-by-point to understand the importance and legal consequences of each clause. This class is taught by Anita Sharma, who is an entertainment attorney based in New York City.
