Arts Appreciation Contest

September 15 - October 20

Introduction

VLA proudly presents the Arts Appreciation Contest for the National Arts & Humanities Month of October 2023. The Contest is open to all artists over 18 years of age, to submit an image of visual artwork (no video or sound). When submitting your work, please include an explanation of the meaning or purpose of the work. Winning Artists will receive a prize of FREE access to a selection of four VLA courses. Your artworks will also be featured on VLA’s social media, with a link to your website and social media pages.  The deadline to submit entries is October 20, 2023.

Art Show Rules 

This Terms of Use Agreement sets the standards of use of the website at Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA). You should carefully read the following rules before applying. By using the VLA website, you (“Artist”) agree to the following:

  • The Artist’s work (“Artwork”) containing pornographic content will not be taken into consideration
  • Contest is open to all artists worldwide over 18 years of age
  • Artist may submit 1 image per entry. 
  • Images should be original work created by the Artist
  • Only the artwork should be visible, clear, and in focus.
  • Image size should be up to 2.0 MB in JPG or PNG format

Awards

  • All winning artists will receive a prize package of free access to a selection of educational courses.
  • The winning pieces will be displayed on VLA’s website and social media channels, including but not limited to Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter. 
  • All accepted works will be displayed with the artist name, title of work, and a link back to their website and/or social media.

Image Preparation 

  • Select an image (up to 2 MB) of your artwork
  • Include the title and an artist statement/description of the work
  • Fill out all required information in the submission box below. 

Criteria for Judging 

The artwork submitted to our competitions will be judged based on the following elements of artistic expression:

  • Originality and Quality of Art
  • Demonstration of Artistic Ability
  • Interpretation of Related Theme 
  • Creativity
  • Overall design
  • Usage of medium

    These terms and conditions constitute an agreement between you ("Artist") and Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, New York (VLANY). To participate in the Arts Appreciation Contest, you agree to the following:

    • If the Artist's work ("Artwork") is selected for the Showcase, Artist grants VLANY a perpetual, non-exclusive worldwide license to display, reproduce, and distribute the Artwork in connection with the Arts Appreciation Contest Online Exhibition.

    • Artist understands and agrees that the Artwork, if selected for the Online Exhibition, may be used for promotional purposes for the Online Exhibition. Artist grants VLANY the right to use the artwork for such promotional purposes.

    • Artist understands and agrees that the Artwork may be available in perpetuity for public viewing on VLANY's website and social media platforms, including but not limited to Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

    • Artist agrees to allow VLANY to archive Artwork chosen by VLA to be part of the Online Exhibition.

    • Artist retains all copyright in the Artwork submitted to VLANY.

    • Mailed materials will not be returned. Please do not send prints, USB drives, compact discs, or other originals.

    • Artists officially selected for inclusion in the Online Exhibition may use the VLANY name and logo to promote the selected Artwork on Artist's website and social media.

    • Artist agrees that no part of the Artwork will violate or infringe upon the rights of any third party. VLANY will not be held responsible for any legal disputes regarding the exhibition of the Artwork. Noncompliance may affect, delay, and/or disqualify an Artist's entry.

    • Artist agrees that there is no action, suit, claim or proceeding pending, affecting or, to the best of Artist's knowledge, threatened against the Artwork or the Artist or otherwise.

    • Artist fully indemnifies and holds harmless VLANY and its respective officers, directors, employees, and assigns from and against any and all claims, damages, liabilities, costs, and expenses in connection with the Artwork, including: reasonable attorneys’ fees and other expenses of defense arising from or in connection with any breach of any of the foregoing agreements, representations or warranties or from or in connection with any litigation or any claim or proceeding commenced by a third party alleging or arising from libel, slander, defamation, invasion of privacy, infringement, unauthorized use or any other right of such third party or wrongful conduct; and any claims which may arise in connection with the Artwork.
